Our Projects

Hascall & Hall Portland Headlight Project

We began work on a cold November day, on Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth, one of the most photographed lighthouses in the country, erecting swing gear and pressure-washing the exterior of the lighthouse. The cleaning exposed numerous cracked and missing mortar joints in this historic lighthouse constructed of brick and rubble. We repointed the joints; then applied two coats of a breathable, elastomeric coating to the exterior walls. We painted the steel after solvent washing to remove salts and grime from the harsh sea air.

One of the most rewarding aspects of our work at Hascall & Hall is looking back at our projects once they’re completed. Among the ranks of our many satisfied customers are colleges, universities, and regional school departments, public institutions, municipalities, departments of the Federal government, the biotech and pharmaceutical industries, commercial food and beverage manufacturers, and scores of other individual building owners. Only when a client is completely satisfied is our job complete—and only then can we attain our greatest desire—the vantage point of looking back upon a project well-done.

Restoration projects such as Portland Head Light that require extensive and complex repairs can be accomplished in phases, deferring less critical details to a time when funds permit. When resources are limited we apply the practicality and judgment New Englanders are known for to provide the greatest return on a client’s investment. Although the Museum at Portland Head Light was at the time unable to secure the funds to fully completely restore the lighthouse, our restoration measures, which lasted more than 10 years, served as a firm stop-gap in avoiding further deterioration to this important historic structure.
